Worldwide, an increase in transgender and non-binary (TNB) people receiving gender-affirming medical care (GAMC) has been seen over the last decades, which means that the population of older (50y+) TNB individuals (receiving GAMC) is growing as well. Meanwhile, health outcomes in this population remain unclear and clinical guidelines are lacking. There is a need for comprehensive studies addressing a variety of 50+ TNB health concerns, among which cardiovascular disease, psychosocial well-being and cognitive functioning are particularly prominent.
By means of this workshop we will work towards evidence-based care for aging TNB people. We aim to set priorities for research on and healthcare for this population by 1) merging current scientific knowledge with clinical practice and lived experience, 2) identifying knowledge gaps and setting an agenda for future research, and 3) creating an interdisciplinary network of people involved in aging and/or transgender healthcare.
The workshop will consist of co-creation sessions and presentations from research, clinical and lived experience perspectives. Co-creation sessions will be a way to think about the topic of older trans people’s health from varying perspectives (including lived experience, clinical and research) and will ensure that everyone has the time and space to contribute their ideas and experience. We will use a bottom-up knowledge production method (starting broad and becoming more specific) that is embedded in multidisciplinary problem solving to produce key areas on which future research should focus. These sessions will require active participation in subgroups to ensure input from as many perspectives as possible.
